With reference to your communication, I am instructed to acquaint you that the Office held by the late Mr. Pope has been entrusted to Mr. George Strohan, whose qualifications particularly fit him for that responsible appointment.

Jam, &c.

True copy,

M. Janout.

Signed, M. Caine,

Colonial Secretary.

Victoria, 23rd December 1847

And with reference to your letter of the 5th August, after a suspense of four months and a half, the case in which I was held to bail had fallen to the ground, and the reasons for which I was suspended from Office being thus done away with, I have to express the hope that His Excellency the Governor in Council will see fit to give me immediate employment, further delay being of serious consequence.

Having reason to believe that this is under misapprehension, as to the necessity for my acting in the way I have done, in the supposition that Major Caine's late Comparator drew such monies only from "The Market" as he may have been entitled to. I beg leave to be allowed to state that the share held in the Market by To Heen Ken, alias Lo Yun Suey, alias Locking, the individual in question, was merely nominal, either solicited by him to give a colour to his claim.

Clerk of Councils,

Leonardo & Almada, &c.
